Many of Kimberly Baker's sterling-silver pieces are big, chunky, and-by design-very rock & roll. "I envision rock stars or 60's icons like Twiggy without jewelry and then picture what I'd make for them," says the Seattle-based jeweler.
We love her sacred heart padlock necklace and rose ring. Baker also turns out simple, geometric shapes reminiscent of 60's modernist design, including a substantial honeycomb ring dotted with diamonds, sapphires, and rubies. "I like big, signature pieces that make the wearer feel powerful and sexy," Baker says. After taking several jewelry making classes, Baker set up a workshop in her kitchen, where, she says, she produced more jewelry than meals.
Now that the young designer has outgrown the makeshift studio, she works out of her recently opened shop, Kimberly Baker Jewelry in Fremont, selling her entire line, including necklaces inspired by sailor tattoos and delicate custom earrings cast from real flowers.
