The finish on gold plated jewelry may fade over time. You may be able to prevent this by taking a few precautions in the care of your jewelry. Gold vermeil has a thicker layer of gold over sterling silver which will last much longer than gold plating but the same precautions will make your jewels shine on!
Always avoid contact with chemicals, such as pool and sea water, hair spray and perfume, lotions, household cleansers, even hard water. You can help avoid these things by not swimming with your jewelry pieces on and by putting your jewelry on last when getting ready to go out. Wipe your jewelry pieces with a soft, clean cloth after wearing to help remove natural body oils.
Gold plating will also eventually tarnish or discolor if left out in the open air. Because of this you should store your jewelry pieces in a jewelry box or jewelry case with the lid closed. This helps reduce the amount of tarnish and the amount of cleaning or polishing needed later. We recommend that you buy anti-tarnish strips to place in your jewelry box. They should last a few months or more and can be found at your local jeweler.
